You want to know who I am? Well, let’s see!

I’m British born and bred, although I have lived most of my life in New Zealand. Sweet as? (Kiwi Saying) I love New Zealand, best little country in the world today, though I’m sure others will have different opinions.

First and foremost, I am a wife and mother of four children, though we lost our youngest 17 years ago. My husband and I have been married for 28 years this year. Our two eldest daughters are in the UK having their OE (Overseas Experience as they call them in Kiwiland). My son is about to start university to study architecture.

This will be the first time my husband and I will have true freedom to do as we wish, when we wish, without the phrase “Get a room” from the kids with our reply of “Don’t need one. Got a house.” And that was just about kissing…lol. Kids these days!

I am a Family History Researcher and have been for the past twenty years. I fell into writing in 2012 and became a multi-genre author because the muses…yeah more than one…wouldn’t shut the up. I have published over thirty books and have over a hundred drafts on my computer. My main genres are Children’s Adventure Stories, Young Fantasy, Young Adult Fantasy, New Adult Murder Mystery Romance under my own name. Under my pen name of Beth Bayley, I write Contemporary Billionaire Romance (reverse aka the woman is the billionaire) as well as a set of Mythical Welsh stories. I also have one wayward muse who I call Chloe King who is an Erotic Author. Pain in the…and a nympho. Meanwhile, I’ll stay prudish, thanks.

In 2014 I established up my own Publishing Company called Plaisted Publishing House Ltd, which now runs Author Services for Formatting, Editing and Book Covers. We’ve helped over forty clients in various different ways. We also do Family History Books and Ghostly Anthologies.

Destroyed blog tour – day two

Welcome to the third day of the blog tour, which features a short excerpt from Destroyed, the fourth book in Madeline Dyer’s Untamed series. The dreamland has now gone, and with the Enhanced posing a new threat, Seven is faced with an impossible choice:

Excerpt from Destroyed

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=”3.4.1″]Destroyed Madeline DyerIt’s just him. My eyes narrow.

Raleigh.

He looks strong, in better shape than any of us. He flexes his arms slightly, and muscles bulge. More muscular than I’ve ever seen him. No guesses as to which augmenters he’s taken.

I stare at him. “How are you finding me?” A tracker? Is there a tracker on me? But no, I know there isn’t. My powers tell me.

Raleigh laughs. “I can always find you. Did you really think I’d let you get away?” He takes a step forward. “You’re the savior, Shania. As if I’d be so careless as to lose you again.”

“Get away,” Elf snarls.

Raleigh snorts. “You think these people can protect you? You think these are the people to save? Look at them—oh dear.” He points at Corin. “Well, he’s not much use, is he?” He laughs again, then he seems to notice Toivo for the first time. He takes a step back. “Well, congratulations are obviously in order.”

“Rot in hell,” Esther whispers.

Elf throws light forward, but Raleigh deflects it. Elf ducks as the light bolts back at him and hits a rock behind us. I hear it shatter.

How are you finding us?” I keep my voice steady, steely.

“Oh, Shania. I own the world. I am powerful. My people are everywhere.” Raleigh shakes his head, mock-sympathy on his face. “Not to mention, I have technology. I have cameras, drones, detection systems in place.” He tilts his head to one side. “That’s the problem with you wild ones. You forget we have advanced beyond running around in caves, being hunter-gatherers. You need to embrace the new direction for the human race. Our ancestors did. They moved out of caves, away from living off the land. It seems, you are moving backward though. That is never a good move. You need to embrace evolution.”

“Even when evolution destroys humanity?” I stare at him.

What do you know about humanity?

My shoulders tighten.

Raleigh shrugs. “Humanity adapts.”

“You have no humanity.” And I look into Raleigh’s soul—and it’s because I’m desperate. I need to know what evil looks like so I know I’m not it. That I’m not destined to become a killer worse than Raleigh.

Iris by Andrew Gates

Posted July 4, 2017

My Review

Iris is a character driven story that takes place entirely in the depths of the ocean. The last of mankind fled to the bottom of the sea after the land became too toxic for human survival. It begins with an explorative expedition with two navy personnel, charged with the task of testing out a new submarine, and I have to confess to being drawn into Iris midway through this first chapter.

Reading on, I found the pacing in the next few chapters rather slow, and very nearly put the book in my DNF (did not finish) folder. A good friend of mine loved this book though, so I persevered, skipping through the parts that I didn’t think really added anything to the story (mainly backstory and excess exposition, plus one whole chapter that could quite easily have been cut out with no detriment to the worldbuilding or characterisation). But, I’m glad I stuck with Iris because it really is a very good story.

It’s multi-pov, providing different perspectives and experiences of the people living in the underground habitat. Iris, of course, is the main pov character, and through her, our eyes are opened to the society around her (and the others). In many ways, there is little difference to the kind of society we know, but being underwater requires a more totalitarian style government. What may come across as necessary rules to some, is seen as oppression by others. As events unfold, and discoveries are made, it challenges everything these characters think they might know about their past, present. and potential future.

Iris is a page turner (once I was past the earlier chapters) and I honestly had a hard time putting it down in the latter part of the book and right up to the end. There are plenty of twists and turns and surprises, and I, for one, am looking forward to reading the second book in this series: Kholvaria

Stormhaven Rising by Eric Michael Craig

Posted June 21, 2017

My Review

I should begin this review by saying that I am totally fascinated by the whole ‘asteroid heading to Earth’ concept. I’ve watched numerous films and read every work of fiction I can featuring asteroids in this very scenario, so when Stormhaven Rising was recommended to me, I jumped at the chance to read it.

Stormhaven Rising isn’t a rehashed ‘Hollywood saves the world’ type story. It has science – real science – and dispels many of the myths we have seen on the big screen. It had an interesting start and was quick to set up the basics of the story and introduce some key characters, and of course the science. I’m not very knowledgeable about advanced science (anything beyond what is taught general science in high school), so when reading a hard sci-fi, I tend to prefer the plot over the science, but in the same respect, I like to learn new things. I certainly learned a lot from reading Stormhaven Rising and for the most part, understood it.

The crux of this story is the government trying to keep knowledge of the oncoming asteroid out of the public domain, and Colton Taylor, an industrialist with seeming unlimited resources, trying to do the exact opposite. I found the character dynamics interesting for the most part. There were parts that went aover my head, or went on for a little longer than I felt necessary, but overall, I enjoyed the story.

This is the first book in the Atlas and the Winds series gives an insight into how the powers that be may react in such a situation versus those who believe people have a right to know.

If you enjoy hard sci-fi, then I would certainly recommend added Stormhaven Rising to your ‘to be read’ list.

Christine Daniel suffers in ways no sixteen-year-old should and no doctor has been able to cure her. The excruciating pains and high fevers debilitating her aren’t triggered by a physical cause but by visions of a youth calling to her while fleeing a mysterious man who means him harm. This could hardly be happening at a worse time, when she and her beautiful older sister Allison are making their début in high society, like other wealthy socialites seeking matches with titled but impoverished gentlemen in Victorian England.

Christine is convinced that to stop the visions she must somehow save this youth. But first, she has to find him. She needs someone who’d know how to locate someone through means outside the known senses, the paranormal. Unfortunately, the authorities have driven underground all but one of the country’s occultists, and the reason she isn’t hiding is the only reason she might help Christine, something she wants in return. Christine must convince Allison to marry the occultist’s lover, one of those impoverished gentlemen, so that the illicit pair can share her part of the family fortune while continuing their affair.

If Christine doesn’t stop the visions by saving the youth, the pains and fevers will eventually kill her. But if she does what the occultist wants, she will betray Allison to a lifetime of misery. Can she lead her sister into a marriage with a bad man if doing so is the only way to save her own skin – literally?

“An ambitious, ardent launch that sets a stellar precedent for installments to follow.” -Kirkus Reviews

Humanity teeters on the brink of galactic war. Only one woman can stop it. Only one man can save her.

After centuries of expansion into the galaxy and no contact with intelligent, extra-terrestrial life, humanity is split into three superpowers, each dominating one of the spiral arms closest to Earth: Orion, Carina, and Sagittarius. Divided along political, cultural, and religious lines, these galactic mega-states have grown alien to each other over time. Inter-arm relations have eroded. Minor differences have become dangerous disparities. Now a ruthless religious faction threatens to plunge the galaxy into a catastrophic war.

Conflict sparks when Sierra Falco, the Carinian prime minister’s daughter, is attacked on her space yacht by a powerful and shadowy enemy. As a popular advocate for peace, Sierra’s loss destabilizes the fragile balance of the galaxy. But her attackers’ plans are disrupted when a rugged band of scavengers stumble across the yacht and jump at the opportunity to make a profit. Davin, captain of the scavenger ship, is caught between the lure of fabulous wealth and the nag of conscience as he is dragged into a conspiracy bigger than he can imagine.

A race begins between those who seek to prevent war and the secretive forces who want to escalate it—apparently with Earth in their crosshairs. In this universe, Earth—the Sacred Planet, the epicenter of human civilization—holds the coveted key to victory. Whoever controls Earth controls the galaxy. Fans of Firefly, Old Man’s War, and the Expanse series will feel at home in the world of Dominion. For a taste of galaxy-spanning adventure and epic space opera.

Guardian by Olivia Arran

Who does he think he is?
The wolf shifter at my door. I pegged him as a shifter the second I laid eyes on him. It was the way he stalked into my apartment flexing his muscles and throwing his weight around, his lips curved in a smirk. Acting like he owned the place.

Smoking-hot, alpha jackass.

It was meant to be just a job.
An easy assignment between covert-ops, but there’s nothing easy or run of the mill about Natasha Silk. Human, gorgeous, with curves that make my mouth water, she’s got everything. Money, fame–a perfect life.

One kiss and I’m sure–she’s my mate. But I won’t claim her. I can’t. Because I’m a damaged man, broken on the inside. Dangerous.

The clock is ticking. Someone is trying to kill her and it’s my job to stop them–not happening on my watch.

In this powerful debut, William Burcher is willing to explore unique and fantastic themes with realism and grit. The GAIAD boldly poses big questions. What do we lose, as we separate ourselves from the earth and each other? Pit of Bones by J.C.Redmond

Posted May 14, 2016

Battling Neanderthals in a struggle for the existence of humanity in a time and place that shouldn’t exist was the last thing Jack and Rene imagined when they promised the Professor they would document the existence of ancient human remains – but there they were.

The story: In 1976 a group of cavers discover the location of an ancient pit in a remote cave site – the legendary pit of bones rumored to be filled with ancient human remains that could forever change the story of the initial occupation of North America. A flash flood disrupts the expedition and forces the group to flee before any evidence is gathered. The leader of the expedition is lost and the pit’s contents falls back into mystery. The Professor was part of that expedition, and he knows now, nearly forty years later, it’s time to uncover the truth.

The protagonist: Jack Landry is an investigative specialist with a passion for the past. From his early exposure on how to process an archaeological dig by his anthropologist uncle, to his studies with the eminent Professor Warren Ladell, Jack is knowledgeable, capable and, even more, a skilled outdoorsman use to working in extreme conditions – he’s just the person for the job.

The truth? The truth is that the pit is a portal to a forgotten time, and the life that was lost in the original expedition not only survived, but emerges as a dominate force in an ancient time and place. With a personality bordering on the sociopathic, the villain Scar becomes leader of the fierce Haltook (Neanderthals) and uses their power – and his modern day knowledge – to pursue a twisted idea of payback. Now, they must stop him – in the past, so they can live in the future.

Ultimately, Jack must navigate the strange, lush land of the past, filled with exotic animals of North America’s past, to overcome the corrupt morals and out of control ego of Scar as he schemes to destroy everything humans ever created. By forging alliances with the ancient shaman Dulkuve and the warrior Quantahan of the Ashtakee tribe, Jack, and his modern counterparts Rene, Professor Laddel, and Trip devise a plan to save the future – if there’s time.

Pit of Bones is a sci-fi tale of mystery and excitement that digs through the layers of time revealing dialectics between past and present. Food, pollution, nature, spirituality, and ego are all pulled between past and present. The pit of bones is a story of our beginnings in a new land that informs us about who we are today.
